When I stumbled upon Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, I was skeptical yet intrigued. A murder, a trivia night gone awry, and a cast of deeply complex women? It felt like a thrilling departure from my usual reading habits. And boy, was I in for an extraordinary ride!
Set in the picturesque town of Pirriwee, this novel unfolds the lives of three women—Madeline, Celeste, and Jane—whose paths cross at the start of a new school year for their Kindergarten-aged children. While their lives are seemingly disparate, Moriarty weaves a tapestry of connections that reveal how secrets can intertwine in the most unexpected ways. As the narrative unfolds, we’re pulled into their personal battles: struggles with parenthood, the weight of expectations, and the haunting presence of past traumas. The exploration of themes like domestic violence, bullying, and the intricacies of female relationships adds depth that feels both relatable and chilling.
What truly astonished me was Moriarty’s writing style. It’s raw and honest, yet laced with a clever wit that keeps you smiling amid the tension. I found myself utterly engrossed, with jaw-dropping twists that left me gasping—literally! I experienced chills while reading certain passages, which the author managed to deliver with impeccable timing.

One of my favorite moments? When I hit 91% through the book and recoiled at a massive reveal, I found myself typing furiously in my notes: GAAAASPPPPPPPPP — did NOT see that coming!!! That’s the kind of magic Moriarty creates—every page is infused with tension, yet there’s an uplifting current that balances the serious themes with moments of levity, making the book feel less like a dark drama and more like juicy drama, as someone aptly described it.
If you’re curious about what’s missing from my review, it’s the extensive quotes I highlighted. The beauty and impact of those moments lie within the context of the story, and I wouldn’t want to spoil them for you. Just trust me when I say they’re poignant.
Having read The Husband’s Secret by Moriarty as well, I can’t help but prefer Big Little Lies. While both novels are compelling, the resolution of this one left me with a sense of fulfillment that lingered long after I turned the last page.
